Free Roman Empire Slot Machine - Instant Play Game
Was there ever an empire grander than the Romans? It held a large portion of the civilised world that we know, and left an irreversible mark on the people and societies it ruled over. Even to this day, when people think of Rome, they think of strong armies, mountains of gold, and a prestigious country like no other! And in this slot, we’re able to go back in time and enjoy all the beauty of old Rome. Just make sure your best friends aren’t planning a knife party for you!
If you’re looking for a graphical powerhouse, we’re afraid we’ll have to disappoint you. IGT was never at the forefront of amazing visuals, that much is true. But a fair amount of time has passed between the initial launch of this game and right now. That much is obvious when you look at the lack of any actual background image or how animations are handled. Still, the overall product still looks quite nice. It’s better to go for a single colour background than to try and pull off something elaborate that they weren’t prepared for!
Gameplay will feel quite familiar to anyone who’s played one of IGT’s releases previously. All the key elements are there! There’s a 5x3 board with 15 flexible paylines, which pay left to right only. Special features consist of free spins triggered by Scatters, a shot at winning the progressive jackpots, and a bonus pick-and-click game. We’re not big fans of cloning slots, and this release comes quite close to it! The only unique thing about Roman Empire is its theme. It borrows heavily from every other slots made by IGT, and fails to leave a memorable impression, as a result.
The layout is still quite functional, even if parts of it are a little too blurry for our liking. The design is similar to a physical machine, while removing most of its most annoying parts. One which has slipped through the cracks is how changing your total bet is handled. Rather than tweaking one or two values to tweak it to your liking, you have to alter three at the same time! First off is the number of active paylines, which we recommend leaving at its maximum fifteen at all times. The other two include the coin denomination and credits per payline. You can stake between GBP 0.01 and GBP 150 per spin.
You will need to play at the maximum credits per payline if you want a chance at winning one of the three progressive jackpots. Without them, you instead get a fixed jackpot value, worth 10,000x for a five-of-a-kind jackpot symbol win. Now, if you ask us, that’s still a fantastic prize; but if you can afford going for the progressive, we absolutely recommend doing that instead! Unfortunately, the game doesn’t give us any information about the RTP of variance of this IGT release.

Roman Empire hosts several special features, and the easiest to understand and use are free spins. Collect three, four or five laurel wreaths will earn you ten, twenty-five or fifty free spins.
In the same way, once you collect enough points by landing golden eagle bonus icons in the right position, you can trigger and pick-and-click special feature. In it, you open lids to reveal cash prizes. This continues until you hit the Stop button.
Finally, three, four or five jackpot symbols will earn you the jackpot, super jackpot or grand jackpot if you’re betting with enough money.
Much like the real Rome, time has eroded this slot’s greatness and left it a hollow shell. Its gameplay elements are all borrowed from other IGT games. It’s an enjoyable experience, but one that lacks a proper identity of its own. The whole time we were playing this release, we wanted to go back and play the slot from which Roman Empire got its idea from. And with graphics no longer being as appealing as they used to be, there’s really only one good reason to go for this game. It all hinges on one, single question, really. How badly do you want that progressive jackpot?
